Wet and windy day in southeast MB..

A nice oil painting look to this morning's webcam shot of downtown Winnipeg thanks to gusty winds and a light drizzle falling. Looks like another wet day in store for Winnipeg and southeastern MB today as an unseasonably strong low pressure system over the Dakotas moves northeast. 20 to 30 mm of rain is possible today especially south and east of Winnipeg.. an area already soaked by heavy rains at the end of May. It will also be cool and very windy.. with northerly winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/h at times through the Red River valley. Not a pleasant day! At least things are looking drier and warmer for the weekend..

  1. Checked the rain guage at 9PM and I only had 5mm for today's rain event. Less than forecast is OK.

  2. Yep.. only had about 8 mm here in Charleswood today, 15-20 mm south and east of the city including Morris and Steinbach. Luckily we didn't get the amounts the models were predicting.. I think models may have been overdoing the low level moisture feed into this system, which wasn't as impressive as it could have been for this time of year. Good thing! We need some dry weather!

  3. Yeah, the models predicted too much rain on the cold side of the low where there was limited instability and no warm air/ moist advection.
All the action was in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Northwestern Ontario, aswell as extreme southern Manitoba.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, there were pockets that received 50 - 100 mm of rain ... including areas on the Manitoba border.

Once again a very sharp cut off to precip off to the northwest. The only good thing about all the rain is that it cut long term moisture deficits for areas south of us. The airport only was 25 mm above normal for May ... not really enough to make a dent in long term deficits after last years record dry summer.
